Why do a Windstorm Mitigation Inspection?
Why do you need a wind mitigation inspection? That question is on the minds of every Florida homeowner. The primary reason to get such a report is to save up to 50% off of your current premium for Florida homeowners insurance. Anyone that has homeowners insurance that includes windstorm coverage knows all to well the high cost that is associated with that in your premium. After the devastation of Andrew, Katrina and Wilma, just to name a few, the prices to insure a home in Florida has almost tripled.
Being aware of the above, it only makes sense that you, as a homeowner, would want to do whatever is possible to reduce your premium. This is where the windstorm inspection can play a great part. Certainly saving money on your homeowners insurance premium can be a great relief, especially during these hard financial times.
If you have ever experienced a hurricane in Florida, or even a strong tropical storm, you can certainly relate to the after effects of the damage that can be caused by wind. The gusts could cause the roof to be damaged, windows broken and any other property damage that can be touched by wind. There could be debris thrown everywhere and it could be a great catastrophic event.
When you have a wind mitigation performed, the inspector comes to your home and goes up into the attic and examines how the roof is constructed based on the hurricane straps, plywood covering and number of nails used to secure the roof to the home. Some of the characteristics that they look for are frame vs. masonary construction, a hip or gable roof, opening protection coverings and tile or asphalt shingle. Having the higher level of enforcement to your home will give you the most credits. Having a home reach the FBC (Florida Building Code) of 2002 is currently the highest level of reinforcement available. (Except in Broward and Dade Counties where the FBC Code of 1994 is still applicable).
